The 80s Post Office logo

Just a very short post about the latest Post Office logo. This isn’t exactly new news but I’ve been meaning to write about it for a while.
I haven’t done any research as to when the left-hand logo was introduced but I’m guessing it’s either late 70s or early 80s. I remember seeing it throughout my childhood. I really like the font, it makes me think of multiple roads and all the places that the postal service has to delivery to. The font and colours were also used by the Royal Mail side of the business.
Anyway, sometime in the late ’90s – they introduced the one next to it. More oval in shape, dark green border, yellow capital letters in a pretty boring type face.
In 2001ish, they bevelled the red centre (like a sweet) and added a drop shadow effect to the name.
In the last twelve months I’ve seen that logo disappearing and the one colour version on the right springing up everywhere. I appreciate it will be much cheaper to print and it does the job. But I can’t help feeling that the Post Office identity has been watered down too much. Okay, the oval is still there but it doesn’t look very attractive. Does it?
I know it’ll never happen but how about bringing back the first one? They could make the font white and still make the same savings.

I agree about the indefinable love of the font. I’ve always felt the same about this (very similar) one: http://625.uk.com/tv_logos/logos/bbc1_stripy_globe.jpg
